Abiding in Shared Humanity: A DEI Perspective Inspired by John 15:4–7
In the pursuit of fostering transformative change in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), it is imperative to draw inspiration from various sources, including scripture, that resonate with our personal and professional journeys. John 15:4–7 presents a profound metaphor of abiding in the vine, symbolizing the interconnectedness between humanity and a higher power. Through an acronym inspired by the word “abides,” encompassing Accessibility, Belonging, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Sustainability, we can explore parallels between this scripture and the essence of DEI work.

Accessibility reflects the premise of inviting all individuals to partake in the fruits of inclusion and equity. In the context of John 15:4–7, Jesus invites us to abide in him, emphasizing the openness and accessibility of his teachings to all. Similarly, in DEI initiatives, ensuring accessibility means removing barriers that hinder individuals from fully participating in organizational life. It entails providing accommodations, resources, and opportunities that enable everyone to thrive.
