REVERSITY IN FULL EFFECT
Silencing the Voices of Advocacy: Racism and Intimidation in Tennessee’s State Legislature
As we celebrate Good Friday today, it is fitting to reflection on the recent racism in full view in Tennessee this week.
The attempt to silence the voices of those who speak out against injustice is an ongoing issue in our society. In Tennessee’s Democratic Legislature, this was made clear when Rep. Justin Jones and Rep. Justin Pearson, two African American legislators, were expelled, while Rep. Gloria Jones, a white female legislator, was not. This unequal treatment is a clear indication of racism and intimidation.
These three legislators were thirsting for equality and justice in light of recent murders of innocent children and teachers.
This is a present-day example of the ongoing struggle for justice and a fitting example of what is described by the concept of “critical race theory.” Critical race theory is a framework that helps us understand how race and racism intersect with other forms of oppression, and emphasizes the need to examine power dynamics and institutionalized discrimination.
While Jesus died on the cross fighting for the poor and disenfranchised, we reminded that our work is not finished yet.
The treatment of these two legislators is a reminder of the injustice that still exists in our society. It is also a reflection of the story of Jesus, who fought for injustices and was crucified for his advocacy and activism.
Despite their expulsion, the voices of these legislators have been heard loud and clear around the world. This is a triumphant moment because they have shined a light on the continuing injustice of those leaders who seek to marginalize and silence the voices of those who speak truth to power.
Their story is like the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke: It is a reminder that look for the whole story of injustice, discrimination and marginalization is told from a variety of viewpoints and perspectives but the outcome is the same. It is also about seeing all the aspects of injustice together in full view.
In the ongoing battle for justice, we must not be deterred by those who seek to silence us. We must continue to fight with a loud voice, not a silent whimper. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” The work is not yet finished, and we must find the energy to continue the fight.
