In 2024, the battle for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) isn’t just a matter of corporate policy — it’s a reflection of our society’s values and the demands of an increasingly diverse consumer base. It’s time to get angry, to get emboldened, and to shout from the rooftops: there is no turning back on the path to true inclusion.

The Consumer is Watching

In today’s world, the consumer base is growing more diverse by the day, and it expects the companies it supports to reflect that diversity in their workforce and practices. Let’s not mince words: companies and organizations that resist efforts to ensure equitable representation at all levels may soon find themselves under attack in their pocketbooks.

This isn’t just about moral obligation; it’s a marketing imperative. Short-sighted attempts to derail opportunities for marginalized communities will result in dire consequences. From lowered innovation and productivity to reduced appeal in burgeoning diverse consumer markets, the message is clear: the consumer is watching, and they won’t stand for exclusion.

The Backlash Against DEI

In this crucial year, DEI efforts are under siege. Lawsuits are on the rise, and vocal opponents like Elon Musk declare that ‘DEI must die.’ It’s a backlash against progress, an attempt to stall inclusion and even resegregate by fiat. I have personally reviewed the attacks on corporations by Steven Miller and understand the motivation.

Let’s be crystal clear: those who stand in the way of diversity and inclusion will face consequences. The marginalized communities that have been ignored for far too long are no longer silent. They refuse to accept efforts to roll back the progress they’ve fought so hard for.

A Wake-Up Call for Corporations

Corporations must recognize that 2024 is a do-or-die moment for their DEI efforts. Lawsuits and opposition should not deter them; instead, they should embolden companies to reaffirm their commitment to a diverse and inclusive workplace. The consumer base is watching, and it won’t accept anything less. Other stakeholders are watching too.

Moreover, 2024 is not a year to run scared because of a vocal and militant right-wing element intent on creating fear and doubt and slowing inclusion (which feels a lot like resegregation). It is a time to build spine in organizational commitment to a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace.

In conclusion, the year 2024 is a wake-up call for corporations. The consumer base is diverse, vocal, and demanding change. The attack on DEI isn’t just a threat to social progress; it’s a threat to the bottom line. It’s time for companies to lead the way, to reject the calls to slow down, and to embrace diversity and inclusion as not just a moral imperative but as the only path forward.

This article is a passionate call to arms, a declaration that the fight for diversity, equity, and inclusion is non-negotiable. The time for complacency is over; the time for action is now.
