To “Kill DEI” is to Sustain White Supremacy

In the current socio-political climate, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives have become both a beacon of hope and a battleground. While advocates view these initiatives as essential to fostering a more just and equitable society, there is a growing counter-movement aimed at dismantling them. This essay posits that any effort to kill DEI is, in essence, an effort to sustain white supremacy. To oppose DEI is to champion a status quo that privileges whiteness, marginalizes people of color, and perpetuates systemic inequities.

The emergence of DEI initiatives has been a response to centuries of entrenched racial inequities. These initiatives are not mere symbolic gestures; they are strategic frameworks designed to address and dismantle the institutional barriers that uphold racial hierarchies. DEI seeks to create environments where all individuals, regardless of race, gender, or background, have equal access to opportunities and resources. It challenges the normalized whiteness embedded in our institutions and strives to reframe power dynamics to be more inclusive and representative.

Opposition to DEI often cloaks itself in the rhetoric of meritocracy, colorblindness, and fairness. Critics argue that DEI undermines individual achievement, fosters division, and perpetuates a victim mentality. However, these arguments are thin veneers…
